VFD Product Specialist I (Technology)

Job Purpose & Reporting Structure

The VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) Product Specialist I is responsible for supporting the application, sale, training and troubleshooting of HVAC VFDs. The company is a global technology leader. The Product Specialists are instrumental in maintaining their dominance in the VFD market.

This position will report to the Sr. VFD Product Specialist.

We are seeking a person who can act not only as subject matter expert on VFDs and Motors, but also demonstrate familiarity with other related HVAC equipment and systems. Primary responsibilities include selection and proper application of VFDs, remote & on-site technical/application support, internal support/training of inside/outside sales and technicians, presenting technical content to end-users and specifying engineers, along with working closely with the VFD factory on the market’s needs on current and future products. This position requires the ability to build strong relationships and provide differentiating technical expertise in the market. 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Include the following (other duties will be assigned):

·         As an entry level VFD Product Specialist I, the successful candidate will be provided detailed training on VFDs, VFD applications, VFD products, specification reading/writing, electrical one-line diagrams, harmonic mitigation, Motors and various related technologies.

·         This training and development will enable the successful candidate to perform a variety of tasks such as:

o   Review specifications for new projects being bid

o   Prepare pricing and proposals for issuance to customers

o   Support the Sr. Specialist with customer training and sales presentations

o   Participate in equipment surveys of existing buildings

o   Perform energy usage analysis and site energy audits

o   Coordinate closely with and provide technical support to our field technicians and new equipment salespeople

o   As Specialists become proficient in the product, they will visit customer sites and engineering customers in support of the New Equipment Sales effort.

o   Support the customer base with troubleshooting, both over the phone and on site

o   Stay up to date with ABB changes, bulletins, updates, product lead times, and communicate this information to the appropriate internal and/or external teams

o   Learn and stay up to date on competitor offerings, capabilities and identification of competitive advantages.

o   Work with engineers to develop multiple design options and be able to clearly explain the benefits and drawbacks of each one for their specific VFD application.

o   Support specifying engineers by making recommendations on updates to their VFD specifications as technology and standards change with time.

o   Review and understand wiring diagrams at the macro system level and within the VFDs and included components.

o   Understand how to commission the VFDs for basic applications

 

Candidate Qualifications:

·         Comfortable working in a dynamic environment, both in the office, the field (sites) and at customer offices. The position has numerous internal and external customers, sales teams, vendors and factories, all of which the VFD Specialist may be part of or lead.

·         Education and/or relevant experience as described below

·         Ability to grasp technical concepts thoroughly and quickly

·         Strong communication skills written and verbal

·         Ability to present technical concepts to less technical audiences

·         Thorough and detail oriented is very important

·         Ability to multitask and remain organized and detail oriented is a key attribute

 

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in technical field (Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred), or Technical School (Associate’s degree) training with Electrical or Mechanical focused content, or similar military technical training. Previous experience with VFDs or HVAC products is a plus.
