Senior Accountant (Accounting)

Comp: $70K-$90K

Position Summary

The Senior Accountant position is responsible for overseeing complex accounting activities, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, and supporting compliance with regulatory standards. This role manages month-end and year-end close processes, analyzes financial data, and provides insights to guide strategic decisions. The Senior Accountant also serves to manage client relationships and as a resource to junior staff, offering guidance and helping to strengthen overall accounting operations.

This position has direct oversight of positions within the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Management and Oversight: Manage all aspects of accounting for a portfolio of clients, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Account Reconciliation: Perform regular and complex bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations to ensure the accuracy of all financial data and identify any discrepancies.
  • Process Optimization and Cleanup: Take the lead in identifying and resolving complex transactional inconsistencies, historical errors, and cleanup work for new clients. Develop and implement improved processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Payroll and Tax Compliance: Oversee payroll processing and ensure accurate and timely filing of all associated payroll taxes. Prepare and file sales tax returns, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Month-End, Quarter-End, and Year-End Close: Supervise and execute all necessary tasks to complete timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual closes, including the preparation and review of comprehensive financial statements (e.g., balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement).
  • Financial Analysis & Advisory: Act as a trusted financial advisor to clients. Analyze financial data, provide insightful reports, and present findings in a clear and understandable manner to assist in strategic decision-making and business growth.
  • Client Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong, proactive relationships with clients. Serve as the primary point of contact for complex issues and financial inquiries, providing expert guidance and support. Follow up with clients on a timely basis to resolve all open items.
  • Client Management Software Maintenance: Ensure that all assigned clients are accurately maintained in Keeper on a timely basis.
  • Mentorship and Training: Assist in the training and mentorship of junior bookkeepers and accountants on best practices, software usage, and complex accounting concepts.
  • Review team: Play a key role on the internal review team, performing quality assurance reviews of staff’s work to ensure accuracy and adherence to firm standards.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Senior Accountant or in a similar leadership role, preferably within an accounting or professional services firm.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and tax regulations.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex account reconciliations, manage cleanup work, and execute close-end procedures.
  • Experience with sales tax preparation and filing.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex financial discrepancies.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and provide expert guidance to clients.
